Daniel Barenboim – Conductor

In two concerts, Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin offer a journey to the heart of the sparkling massif of Beethoven's symphonies.

If the Second Symphony is noble, lively, proud, with a burning fantasy that seems to want to multiply the sound space, the Third was initially presented as a tribute to Bonaparte, the "liberator" of Europe. Then, the composer changed his perspective. When Napoleon flouted the ideal of the French Revolution in the composer's eyes by having himself crowned emperor, Beethoven, crossing out his dedication, is said to have exclaimed: "Now he will obey only his ambition! He will rise higher than the others, become a tyrant!" The definitive title of the work was then changed to Heroic Symphony, composed to celebrate the memory of a great man. And the Triumphal March of the second movement became a Funeral March.
