Pianist and conductor Sunwook Kim gained international renown in 2006 by winning the prestigious Leeds Piano Competition at just 18 years old. Since then, he has performed with the world's leading orchestras, such as the London Philharmonic, the Tokyo Philharmonic, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. A guest at renowned festivals, he is also a prolific recording artist. In September 2023, he was appointed music director of the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra.
Sunwook Kim gained international recognition at the age of 18 when he won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition in 2006, becoming the competition's youngest winner in 40 years, as well as its first Asian winner. His performance of Brahms' Concerto No. 1 in the final was unanimously praised by the critics. Since then, he has established himself as one of the greatest pianists of his generation.
In June 2016, with the support of Piano**** in collaboration with Accentus, he recorded Beethoven's "Waldstein" and "Hammerklavier" Sonatas in the Jesus-Kirche in Berlin, so dear to Karajan.
Sunwook Kim has already performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the BBC Philharmonic Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the BBC Philharmonic.
In recital, he has been a guest at the Klara Festival in Brussels, the Ruhr Piano Festival and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival in Germany, the Chopin Society in London and Vancouver, and the Duszniki Zdroj International Chopin Festival in Poland.
The 2023/24 season includes his debut with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and his conducting debuts with several orchestras. In September 2023, he was appointed music director of the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra until December 2025.
