“The last great lady of the Soviet school,” wrote a French journalist, and a Spanish critic called her an anti-diva. They are both right.
Born in Tbilisi, trained at the Moscow Conservatory, Elisabeth Leonskaja is one of the great pianists of our time. Winner of the Enesco, Long-Thibaud and Reine Élisabeth competitions, her career was marked by her deep friendship with Sviatoslav Richter. Exiled to Vienna in 1978, she built an international career there with the greatest orchestras and conductors. A regular guest at major festivals, she also devotes herself to chamber music. His extensive discography includes the complete Schubert sonatas, works by Schumann, and more recently concertos by Mozart and Beethoven, published by Warner Classics. She has received numerous honors, including the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, as well as the title of “Priestess of Art” in Georgia. In 2020, she received the prestigious ICMA Lifetime Achievement Award.
