Wilfried Strehle, having studied with Tibor Varga, joined the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1971, then conducted by Hebert von Karajan. He was the principal viola of the illustrious orchestra from 1984 to 2013.
His reputation as a chamber musician led him, from the very beginning, to be part of the Brandis Quartet for 25 years, the Octet of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ensemble Wien-Berlin, and the Trio Berlin.
He devotes a large part of his time to teaching the viola, first at the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker, where many of his students are playing viola in European orchestras in Berlin, Vienna, Munich, Dresden, Leipzig.
He is now a sought-after professor at the Mozarteum Academy in Salzburg, Yale University, and the Barenboim-Said Academy. He has been a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts since 2001.
